What if changing two words in your communication with your teen could lower your frustration? I learned this tip from John Gray (‘Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus’) and although he intended it for use with men, I found it works wonders with teens! The teen brain is very literal so when you make a request using ‘can’ or ‘could’, teens feel insulted because it refers to capability. Replacing those two words with ‘will’ or ‘would’ makes a big difference because they refer to choice so your teen feels empowered to decide, rather than told. This tiny shift increased respect and the odds your teen will do as you’ve asked.
